Have you ever pondered over our undergraduate studies? Did you ever contemplate over the pattern of our stereotyped educational system? How far is it contrary to developed countries? How should ones intellectual ability be assessed? Should academic grades be the only yardstick to distinguish between students ? Is formal education required for acquiring intelligence? How far has Job Market affected the attitude of students? Is Pragmatic  life opposed to theoretical studies in Pakistan?

These are pertinent questions that shall be addressed in my article over the heart touching topic for our students, and their parents? Pakistan was founded in 1947 with the objective of establishing a home for Muslims of the sub continent to blossom, and spread as tgey lagged behind Hindus.

You will be bewildered to hear that one of the reason for an Independent country was access to independent research, and higher education.   Firstly, Pakistan’s demography vouchsafes to us that the ratio of students who get to professional institutes are meager, and those who graduate are only 10 percent in accordance with the study by the UNESCO. Moreover, this fact is highlighted by the depreciating GTE Ratio of 5 percent whereby in India, and Bangladesh. The figure amounts to 7, and 12 percent. 5 percent is the tipping limit upon which Pakistan rests.  those who enroll in universities, do not complete their degree, and are dropped so, this grows pressure over our society. The gap that is prevalent in society for rich  poor ; the same is abuzz with Degree, and Non-degree students.

In my viewpoint, poverty, lack of resources, and opportunities become the reason for college as well as university dropouts who are not able to continue their studies. The consanguinity between the dropouts, and GTE owes to lack of academic research plus administrative collapse of universities.   Secondly, we need to relate the aforementioned issue with the demeanor of our nation. Society has evolved in such a way that they gratify those who have degrees but do not praise a person for sole intellectual capability. We are in a phase where we require our youth to possess creativity in the arena of art, of diplomacy, Economics, Fashion Industry along with multifarious other sectors.

This is a prerequisite to meet the competing global trends. Did we ever question ourselves about Plato, Aristotle or Galileo? They were apt to critical thinking with an infusion of spirit for discovering the nature. We make them the epitome of our ethics, and social issues but never tend to look towards their education. This was corroborated by the fact that the Government College University, Lahore from where I studied d had to face this dilemma for a whole year as people refused to work under government influence. A problem that needs to be evaluated is the predilection faced by instructors who have certain expertise but also hidden potential in managerial skills so, should be provided on service training. Enforcement of such regulations could be achieved in a robust manner through Decentralization. In academic terms, it implies to a process in which the heads of departments, faculty managers, and deans are given full autonomy over the working of his or her department. In this regard, the leader ( Chair person) should be an epitome of success for his subordinates.

Thirdly, to cherrypick a person for a job from a renowned university is nothing but tantamount to disrupt the structure of a pluralistic society. The fact of the matter is that certain multi national,  and national corporations have vested interests to hire graduates from universities like LUMS, GIKI, NUST, and other few universities. They are without a doubt the talented cream of the country but some students owing to abridgement of opportunities along with financial constraints are not able to acquire admissions in such institutes. Consequently, government centres captivate them but are unable to provide jobs as they graduate posing a challenge to them. It is indeed a hard nut to crack if you are rejected by the multifarious companies for the mere reason that your university had not paid enough Exceptions are present but only in some sectors of education.

Society has evolved in such a way that they gratify those who have degrees but do not praise a person for sole intellectual capability. We are in a phase where we require our youth to possess creativity in the arena of art, diplomacy, Economics, Fashion Industry along with multifarious other sectors. This is a prerequisite to meet the competing global trends. Did we ever question ourselves about Plato, Aristotle or Galeleo? Today, our universities do not allow students to think out of the box. This not only undermines a person intelligence but also inhibits the flow of innovative ideas, and pioneering elucidations to dilemma on  Mohsin Shafique, a victim of educational system claims that the sole issue with our higher studies is the lack of pragmatic work which is required in job selection. Most Importantly, it  is  the assessment system  that  embeds modern  education  and a liberal  mindset be built upon  critical thinking. Our educational system, is molded by redundant conservative values discouraging questioning and stresses obedience.  Submission and rationale thinking are both groomed by the institution. In, Germany, a teacher is respected byeven the judge , and he rises from his order as the instructor enters the court.

If we dig into the pit, we find that all the strings are attached to our governance.

A study from Punjab University categorically states that the core issue lies in an administrative structure of academia.

Financing, and prioritising education is also the duty of the government. Albeit, the funds should be raised by the universities themselves but not at the cost of exploitation of students.

On the contrary, the private universities generate funds through sponsorships, and contracts with corporate companies. Therefore, they prepare graduates for the needs of industry. Wealthy businessmen have founded universities like LUMS, Bahria, University of Lahore etcetera. They train graduates on their own lines by hiring foreign faculty along with provision of lucrative emoluments. Even institutes like NUST though it comes under military umbrella,  it has a proper code, and perks for foreign faculty particularly, in engineering sciences.   So what discerns us from the urbanized world?  Most Importantly, it  is  the assessment system  that  embeds modern  education  and a liberal  mindset be built upon  critical thinking.

In a nutshell, Pakistani universities have complications on smorgasbord which cannot be addressed in one article. However, the gist of all our debate is that to enhance the quality of higher education, and research ,one has to work on civilizing his or her own methodology of teaching. Along with this, government has to enhance funding to HEC but in the form of more foreign scholarships that are depreciating day by day since, 2009. To equip our teachers with better medium of instruction, one has to send them broad to discover the hidden potentials inside them.
