I’m aware that most of you have exploded with giggles upon seeing the title of this essay. Others are staring fixedly upon it with condescending glares. Yes, I’ve used “the S word”. But here’s the thing – you’re afraid to say it, but you’re not afraid to watch it.

The word “pornography” has Greek origins. It literally means “the writing of harlots”. Greeks and Romans chiefly contributed to the commencement of the practice of being exposed to the naked body of the human being with Venus of Willendorf and a number of other pieces. Over centuries, the concept has evolved into what it is today – blatant overexposure of one’s mind and soul to something that is supposed to be kept hidden. However, the problem with this exercise can’t be discussed without erasing the negative connotations that accompany the word “sex”.

Hollywood contributes to the idea of copulation as a physical act of mere frivolity. However, the real thing transcends external comprehension. To lower down one’s guards in such complete entirety allows the flow of interpersonal energy is the most ultimate stage of intimacy and complete trust between two individuals. This is why a state of such immense vulnerability and absolute surrendering of one’s self to another can and must not be associated to anything less than the union and transfusion of two souls.

Pornography violates the privacy of this act of infinite intimacy. It materializes and tarnishes a beautiful thing and in doing so, damages the soul of a human being because of the destructive potential that the unveiling of this curtain carries – the influx of evil and poisonous energies in an act of purity. The negativity then settles inside the human mind like filth, and reduces one to an animal-like state of oblivion to the inner self, which is the diametric opposite of what coitus is intended for. This is the reason why sexual energies are to be maintained in the manner that Islam has guided – a secret.

The very rating of pornography (restricted) suggests constraint from exposure to it. Why do something that itself begs you not to do it?
