Aiza Chaudry

She’s bold and undoubtedly brilliant.  She may not be a sorceress albeit ( I’m pretty sure) all the great magicians envy her, for this lady knows how to capture moments, manipulate them and create magical realms.

Yes, yes, we’re speaking of “The Rida Shah”. If you haven’t heard of her, now is your golden chance.

Thank you Rida for taking  some time out for Self Projections. Let us now proceed.

 1

Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a young concept based photo manipulation artist, and I show the darker truths of society through my work. I’m doing bachelors in Communication designing from NCA (National College of Arts).

How did you develop an interest in photography?

It started as a hobby. I used to take pictures of everything I saw with a cell phone. With time it became a passion.

6

How long have you been a photographer?
I guess it’s been 5 years now.

4

How would you describe your style?
My style is dark and conceptual. My focus is bringing forward those topics through my work which the society declares as a taboo.

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I think I knew it before coming to this field how to avoid people who just keep asking for free shoots and favors and don’t respect the artist and the efforts he puts in.

2

Do you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
All self taught.
Your work is beautiful and extraordinary, how do you educate yourself to take better pictures?
I get inspiration from other artists daily, watch online tutorials and keeps on trying different ideas which helps me improve my work.

3

What technology/software/camera gear do you use to keep focused on what you do best, as you photograph?
Well, one should never limit his/her creativity if he’s not able to afford a fancy gear. I’ve worked for 5 years with a beginner’s DSLR (Nikon D3200) and still got appreciation (alhamdulillah). It’s the idea and skill that matters. I recently upgraded my DSLR to Nikon D610.
And for editing I use photoshop CC.

What camera do you trust for photography?
As I mentioned, it’s about the skill mainly. As far as technical side is concerned, I believe my full-frame D610 produces a very fine result and I’m pretty satisfied with it

Your favorite lens? Why?
85mm 1.4g. Amazingly sharp and best for portraits.
What are your settings out in the field?
Aperture –
Shutter Speed –
ISO –
White Balance –
Focus – Manual/Auto
Image Format – RAW/JPEG

It all depends on the type of environment I’m taking the picture in and the mood I want to create. One can’t specify the settings, they keep on changing for every shot.

What is your favorite editing software? And how important is it to you?
Photoshop CC. It plays the role of a life saver for a photographer in worst scenarios, haha.

If you could be invisible for a day which area would you shoot?
I’d love to go underwater and shoot.

Whose work has influenced you most?
I love Abdullah Haris’s work. It’s always been an inspiration for me.

What do you take with you when you travel? Why?
My gear and stuff of course. And why, because I love photography? Haha

Your favorite work, favorite photograph you shot recently?
I love the photo manipulation I made on ‘Social media slavery’.

What or who inspires you?
Daily life events, it can be a sad incident or a beautiful experience. Anything can be a source of inspiration.

Someone or Something you would like to photograph?
Not sure about that yet.

Do you work on commission?
Yes.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I’m not sure where will I be in next 10 years, but I hope wherever I am, I achieve the goals I’ve set for myself.

Your hobbies?
Designing, drawing, singing and eating (I’m a hardcore foodie. LoL)

Your favorite film?
There are so many. I love conceptual and thriller ones.

Your favorite quote?
Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. Eleanor Roosevelt

If you found a magic lamp, what would be your 3 wishes?
I think wishes should be kept between you and your God only. But yes the first thing I’ll ask for is me and my parents’ health.

Any tips for the beginners?
Keep exploring different genres of photography, until you find the one which you enjoy the most. Then stick to it and make it your strength.
